How to Clean Your Electric Bike 1

Riding your e-bike is a blast, but cleaning it after a muddy adventure can feel daunting. However, with our guide, you can easily tackle the task, no matter how messy it gets.

What You’ll Need

Cleaning your e-bike doesn’t require expensive tools. Gather a bucket of water, a few brushes, degreaser, and chain lube. A bike stand and hose can be helpful, but if you don’t have them, just lean your bike against a wall. Keep your user manual handy, especially for the first few cleanings.

Cleaning Your Electric Bike in 3 Steps

 1. Remove the Battery and Electronics

Water and batteries don’t mix. Start by removing the battery and setting it aside. If your e-bike has a computer display that can't be removed, cover it with cling film or a plastic bag to keep it dry.

2. Start Scrubbing

Using a hose or jug, rinse the entire bike with water, but be mindful of how much you use. An efficient nozzle is best, and remember to turn off the tap between rinses. **Avoid using a pressure washer** as it can damage bearings and remove grease from hidden parts.

Don’t worry if some water enters the battery compartment; there are drains to manage this, and the plugs have anti-corrosion coatings. Use your sponge or brushes to remove dirt from the frame, wheels, and pedals, paying special attention to the bottom bracket where grime tends to accumulate.

3. Degrease and Clean the Drivetrain

Cleaning your e-bike’s moving parts is essential. Apply degreaser to the chain, chainrings, cassette, and rear derailleur to keep everything running smoothly, but avoid getting it on braking surfaces. After applying the degreaser, wait a few minutes, then wipe away the excess with a damp cloth.

 After Cleaning

Ensure your bike is completely dry before reinstalling the battery. If needed, use a dry cloth to soak up any remaining water.

Can You Use Bike Cleaners on E-Bikes?

Definitely! We recommend using biodegradable bike shampoos and degreasers, as they effectively remove dirt and are gentle on your bike’s protective seals.

How Often Should You Clean Your Electric Bike?

As a rule of thumb, clean your bike as often as possible, even if it’s just a quick wipe down. This approach is better for the environment, reducing water and chemical use.

Make sure to wash your bike thoroughly after longer rides, especially near the coast, where salty air can accelerate corrosion. Regular cleaning will help keep your components in top shape, no matter the weather!
